What are the different types of wool?Updated 25 days ago

When it comes to wool you aren't short on options. If you are just taking your first steps into the world of wooly jumpers, you may be a little unsure and overwhelmed by all the different types of wool. Below we have provided some insight of where each wool comes from and what benefits they provide.

Lambswool

Lambswool is a high quality wool sheered from young sheep. It is known for it's softness and for being far less itchy than the standard wool garments you may find on the market. Lambswool jumpers are wardrobe essential and we have lots of choices for you to add to your collection.

What are some of the benefits of Lambswool?

  1. It's Superior Comfort and Softness: Lambswool has finer fibres which makes it soft and less itchy than the standard sheep's wool garments found in many standard shops
  2. It Regulates Temperature: Lambswool is a natural insulator , trapping heat in whilst being breathable  to keep you cool during milder weather.
  3. Low Maintenance: Lambswool jumpers are easier to clean and don't require washing as often as many over clothing items. The care instructions should be followed carefully as these garments are typically hand wash only. It is important to also dry the garments flat and steaming lambswool can help increase it's lifespan.
  4. Moisture Resistance: Lambswool can absorb up to 30% of it's weight in water before becoming damp and heavy.
  5. Durability and Elasticity: Lambswool is renowned for it's durability. It's short fibres allows garments to keep their shape and prevent stretching.

Geelong Wool

Geelong wool is a type of Lambswool that is sourced from merino sheep in Australia. It is known for it's cashmere like feel, breathability, sustainability and for being hypoallergenic.

What are some of the benefits of Geelong wool?

  1. It's Luxurious Softness: Geelong wool is considered to be one of the softest types of lambswool in the world.
  2. Superior Insulation: Geelong wool is lightweight and it's garments are typically made to be thinner than standard lambswool jumpers. However, it still offers excellent warmth
  3. High-Quality Fibre: The fibres of Geelong wool are fine, smooth and gentle of the skin.
  4. Durability: Geelong wool is also known to maintain it's shape and quality.

Merino Wool

Merino wool is sourced from Merino sheep. Whilst similar to Geelong it is not sourced from the first sheer of young sheep. It is known for being incredibly soft, light weight and for it's moisture wicking properties.

What are some of the benefits of Merino wool?

  1. Soft and Non-Itchy: Merino fibres are very fine giving the garment a soft feel and allowing them to brush against the skin rather than prick the skin when worn.
  2. Temperature Regulation and Moisture Wicking: Merino Wool acts as a personal climate control system which keeps you warm in the cold and cool in the heat. Perfect for all seasons. It also absorbs moisture, pulling the sweat away from your body, keeping you dry.
  3. Odour Resistant: due to it's moisture wicking properties, it absorbs moisture from your body preventing bacteria from growing and producing odour.

Cashmere

Cashmere is a ultra fine, luxurious and lightweight wool. Primarily sourced from Cashmere goats in Mongolia and China. It is sourced through combing during molting rather than shearing.

What are the benefits of Cashmere?

  1. Unmatched Softness: Cashmere is incredible soft and delicate offering a luxurious feel.
  2. Warmth Without Bulk: Cashmere is very lightweight  but it is an excellent insulator which traps air to provide exceptional warmth.
  3. Breathability and Temperature Regulation: Cashmere is breathable and moisture wicking. This allows it to regulate body temperature.
  4. Durability: Cashmere is long lasting, when properly cared for they can last a lifetime.

Shetland Wool

Shetland wool is sourced from sheep on the Shetland isles in Scotland and is known for it's softness and durability. Whilst being very different to other wools.

What are the benefits of Shetland Wool?

  1. Texture and Feel: Shetland wool is soft and silky, it is coarser than many other wools offering a rustic feel.
  2. Structure: High crimp provides loft and insulation.
  3. Durability: it is known for its high tensile strength making it long lasting.
  4. Performance: Shetland wool is moisture-wicking and flame-retardant.
